MyBeans — Growing Your Future

Claim Your Child’s $1,000

What just happened

Starting October 1, 2026, the federal government is automatically enrolling eligible children in Trump Accounts — tax-advantaged investment accounts for kids. Your child may already have one and you don’t know it yet. (Temporary regulations published September 29, 2026.)

The $1,000 is NOT automatic. Auto-enrollment opens the account, but the $1,000 federal seed deposit requires a separate step — an election filed with the IRS (Form 4547). Under the law, the government can’t make that election for your child — only you can. No election, no $1,000. Don’t leave free money on the table.

Is my child eligible?

  • The account: children under 18 with a valid Social Security number are being auto-enrolled.
  • The $1,000 seed deposit: U.S. citizen children born January 1, 2025 – December 31, 2028. File Form 4547 with your tax return or at trumpaccounts.gov to elect it.

What to do this week

  1. Find out if your child is enrolled. Parents claim and activate accounts through the official Trump Accounts app or trumpaccounts.gov, verifying identity. Note: the exact claiming process is still rolling out — if it stalls, check back; Treasury is updating it.
  2. Claim the $1,000. File the IRS election (Form 4547). This is the one step that unlocks the seed money.
  3. Don’t accept the default blindly. Accounts invest in low-cost index funds (managed through Robinhood and BNY Mellon), and you can choose among the available options. We’ll explain them in plain English — no jargon.
  4. Add your own money. Once you claim the account, families can contribute up to $5,000/year (employers up to $2,500/year — ask your HR if they offer Trump Account benefits). Even $10/month on autopilot matters enormously over 18 years.
  5. Learn together. An account you understand beats an account you ignore. That’s what we’re here for.

Free money, your hand on the wheel

The government opened the account. But it’s your family’s money — know that you have it, learn how to access it, grow it, add to it. Don’t let it sit there on someone else’s terms.

Final v2, 2026-09-29 — approved for release. Updated with September 29 Treasury temporary regulations. Remaining uncertainty: the parent claiming process is not fully spelled out in the regulations (per Wall Street Journal) — verify current claiming steps at trumpaccounts.gov before acting.
